A water heater usually gives warning before it quits: water that never gets quite hot, a rumble as sediment cooks on the bottom of the tank, rusty tint at the tap, or a damp ring at the base. We look at the age of the unit, the anode, and the burner or elements before talking replacement, because plenty of heaters just need a part.
When a tank does need to go, we size the new one to how the house actually uses hot water, set it level, pipe it with proper unions and a drip pan where the location calls for one, and haul the old tank away. You get shown the shutoff and the temperature setting before we leave, so nothing about the new unit is a mystery.
